Atari Eyes
Atari Eyes explores how information about nearby space can be translated into understandable non-visual feedback for blind and low-vision people.
The project does not attempt to reproduce sight. It investigates whether selected environmental conditions—such as distance, direction, motion or temperature differences—can be communicated through carefully designed vibration, sound or spoken cues.
Research questions
Atari Eyes will examine which environmental information is useful, which feedback patterns are easy to distinguish, how quickly a cue can be understood, whether repeated feedback causes fatigue and how the device communicates uncertainty or failure.
Separate safety case
Atari Eyes remains separate from the Vitalis healthcare core. It requires its own intended use, user research, hazard analysis, prototype versions, verification tests, usability studies and release decisions.
First prototype
The first controlled prototype will focus on a small number of measurable signals, such as left/right direction, near/far distance, normal operation and device fault.
Initial testing will use controlled environments, supervision and defined stopping rules. A prototype result will not be presented as evidence that the system is ready for independent navigation.
Current boundaries
Atari Eyes is not currently an approved medical device or independent mobility aid. It does not claim to restore sight, replace a white cane or guide dog, guarantee obstacle detection or support unsupervised street navigation.
